I'm always astonished to see door wreaths selling for £5 at our local market - but there's no shortage of buyers! Ours is always a homemade effort, usually a few evergreen leaves and berries pushed into a willow wreath base that came free on the front of a magazine years ago. It seems to last OK, though it never goes up before the start of December - but the birds sometimes nick the berries! It seems just as welcoming to come home to as any amount of gaudy tinsel. When I was growing up my family usually had an Advent table Wreath, which has four candles on it and one in the centre. It was made of holly, ivy & other evergreens, and the first candle was lit on the first Sunday in Advent and one more candle lit each Sunday. Then a big candle would be added & lit on Christmas day and the wreath was the centrepiece of the Christmas table - very symbolic, mysterious & beautiful. I remember helping my mother make it, and love helping my own children occupy their hands & minds constructively in the frantic run-up to the great day itself. Below are some craft ideas for you to try out; I hope to add more in as we go along.
